Inspect features

Press i to switch to inspect mode, and i (or Esc) again to leave it.

  • Hover shows the top feature under the pointer in the status bar.
  • Click lists every feature at that spot, drawn or not: roads, street names, buildings, parks, land cover, points of interest. The most specific come first, and the selected one is highlighted on the map.
  • Click an entry, or press Tab / Shift+Tab, to switch between them.
  • y copies the selected feature as JSON to the clipboard (OSC 52).

For each feature:

  • the style layer that draws it, or that no layer does
  • its source and source layer, and the tile it came from
  • geometry type, center, length or area, and vertex count
  • all of its properties

“Drawn or not” matters: vector tiles carry far more than any style shows. Inspect is a quick way to learn what a tileset contains and what to filter on when you write a style.

--pick COL,ROW with --snapshot prints the same information as JSON lines, one feature per line:

Terminal window
mapterm --at 38.8895,-77.0353 -z 16 --snapshot 100x40 --pick 50,20

The center cell of a 100×40 frame is the Washington Monument. Here are the first three features, with the translated name:xx properties left out:

Fields that start with _ are mapterm’s: _layer is the source layer, _style_layer the style layer that draws it (absent when none does), _tile the z/x/y tile, _center a lon/lat. The rest are the feature’s own properties.

Data layers you add with --geojson are listed first.
