Controls

mapterm’s controls follow the MapLibre GL / Mapbox GL defaults, so they behave the way web maps do. Moves are eased, and a fling keeps gliding with the same inertia constants MapLibre uses.

Action What it does
Scroll, or two-finger swipe up/down Zoom toward the cursor
Two-finger swipe left/right Pan sideways
Drag Pan; let go while moving and it keeps gliding
Double-click Zoom in one level at that spot
Shift + double-click Zoom out
Shift + drag Box zoom: draw a rectangle to fit
Right-click Nothing (reserved, as in MapLibre)
Key What it does
Arrows or h j k l Pan
+ / - Zoom to the next whole level
/ Search for a place
m Switch the map style: the built-in one, then OpenFreeMap liberty, positron, bright, dark and fiord
c Copy the coordinates under the pointer (or the map center) as lat, lon
i Inspect mode on or off
v Cycle the vector overlay over a raster layer: all, labels only, off
n Labels on or off
t Light or dark theme (built-in style)
s Smooth scrolling on or off, when enabled
q Quit
Input What it does
Hover Show the top feature under the pointer in the status bar
Click List every feature at that spot in a side panel
Click an entry, Tab, Shift+Tab Select another feature in the list
y Copy the selected feature as JSON (OSC 52)
Esc Close the panel; i leaves inspect mode

Press /, type a place and press Enter. With one match the map flies there, MapLibre flyTo style: out, across, and back in. With several, a list opens: pick one with the arrows or Tab and press Enter, or click it. Esc clears the marker.

Search uses Photon, an OpenStreetMap geocoder, by default. MAPTERM_GEOCODER=nominatim switches to Nominatim, or set it to the URL of your own server.

m cycles through the styles: the --style you started with (if any), the built-in terminal style, then OpenFreeMap’s liberty, positron, bright, dark and fiord. Only the basemap changes: imagery stays underneath and your data layers stay on top. t switches dark and light whenever the built-in style is showing.

c copies lat, lon under the pointer, or of the map center if the pointer hasn’t been over the map, to the clipboard over OSC 52 (see y doesn’t copy if nothing arrives).

Everything works over SSH (for kitty images, see satellite imagery over SSH). Inside tmux or other multiplexers, mouse reporting must be enabled (set -g mouse on in tmux). Raster images need a multiplexer that passes kitty graphics through; herdr does, and mapterm keeps its image memory under herdr’s per-pane limit.
